Ever been that guy who wasn’t invited to the party? Me too. For some reason there’s always that sense of foreboding Buy windows 7 key, even if it’s not somewhere you particularly wanted to go, with people you know you didn’t want to see. It still leaves you a little hollow inside, doesn’t it?

That’s precisely how I feel about an upcoming jolly in Portugal, which I so desperately wish I was invited to, even though no one should really want to attend something like this. No doubt the celebrations will be loud and raucous as the attendees strategise to secure themselves massive windfalls for the next year.

No, this isn’t the Royal Bank of Scotland’s annual staff party. I imagine those are quite somber occasions nowadays. This is the ’secret’ party that the European Environmental Paper Network (EEPN) is assembling in just a few weeks time. Sounds riveting, right?

I thought you’d be interested in this party because you’ll actually be footing a lot of the bill. Not just now, or at the event, but for the foreseeable future too. You and the world’s poor that is (the 99%, if you will) Windows 7 Key, funding a jaunt for European paper producers to talk shop on protectionism and how they’ll continue to racketeer from developing nations.

In short, European taxpayers are propping up ‘certification processes’ like those touted by the Forest Stewardship Council, an unelected Exchange Server Key, non-governmental organisation that the UK government among others entrusts with access to an industry worth over £4bn to Britain’s economy. To put this in perspective for you, in 2009 the UK music industry was valued at £3.9bn.

Groups like the Forest Stewardship Council have an overtly political motivation and rather than basing their work on sound science, often force upon their victims politically motivated mandates, one of which the British Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman recently bragged about at the ‘Planet Under Pressure’ conference in London – a meeting of international governments and NGOs that cost the UK taxpayer in excess of £150,000 for a few of our bureaucrats to sponsor and attend.

Spelman boasted about how her Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs forced Kenyan wood carvers into using wood that the FSC certified, rather than their local product, by then granting them access to lucrative British markets. This not only distorts local trade and free markets, but creates an international form of welfarism when we are struggling to curtail a national problem of the very same kind.

Government handouts and mandates from non-transparent bodies (seriously, these guys make the EU look good) is a combination that will ensure the developing world remains impoverished and reliant upon taxpayer subsidy. And we’re paying twice.

When you buy a paper product, you’re usually taxed on it. Then you’re taxed on your income, which in turn goes into funding these ‘anti-growth groups’ who drive up prices through their ‘activism’ bolstered by their ‘green credentials’.

Again, for us to maintain some perspective on the matter, all we need to do is look at paper prices around the world. In 2001, you could get a tonne of paper for about $400. By 2011, the price was almost $1000 for the same quantity. And you wonder why fewer people have home printers, why the price of your latte has risen, why printing invites to Portuguese parties costs double what it did 10 years ago and why newspapers are so keen for you to shell out £600 for an iPad so they can send you their articles via an app.

This stuff is hitting you in the pocket over and over again, and I personally would like an invitation to the party where these guys will be discussing how they can make it all the worse for us, and all the better for themselves. I’ll even compromise and pay my own way there (as well as theirs, apparently) and forgo the traditional postal invite on 300gsm card. You know… to save the planet. Right?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The British judicial inquiry investigating questionable reporting practices by Rupert Murdoch’s media properties is unlikely to cooperate with a prominent senator’s request for evidence of misconduct in the United States replica watches, three people familiar with the inquiry said.

The sources said that the judicial inquiry, created by British Prime Minister David Cameron and chaired by Sir Brian Leveson, a senior English judge, is not authorized to provide legal assistance or evidence to other bodies or organizations, including foreign government agencies or components. Nor is the inquiry investigating matters outside Britain.

Jay Rockefeller, chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, on Wednesday sent a letter to Leveson asking if his inquiry has uncovered any misconduct on the part of Murdoch’s News Corp that occurred in the United States or violated American laws.

Murdoch and his global media empire have been embroiled in a “phone hacking” and bribery scandal since last summer when evidence emerged that Murdoch’s now-shuttered News of the World tabloid hacked into voicemails of a missing British schoolgirl.

U.S. critics of Murdoch have been trying to instigate official investigations into whether similar questionable practices were pursued by Murdoch journalists in the United States, but so far U.S. probes have been limited.

Murdoch’s properties in the United States include Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Post.

Rockefeller’s request came after a British parliamentary committee issued a report on Monday that found Murdoch “not a fit person” to run a major international company, asserting that he was ultimately responsible for illegal phone hacking. [ID:nL5E8G1B3E] News Corp denounced the report’s analysis as “unjustified and highly partisan.”

Rockefeller directed his request to the independent Leveson inquiry, which is conducting an in-depth investigation into journalism practices used by British media owned by Murdoch and other proprietors.

However, there is no mechanism by which it would be within Leveson’s purview to provide official assistance to Rockefeller or his committee, said the people familiar with the inquiry.

“Not in a month of blue Sundays” would Leveson agree to pass on evidence to Rockefeller’s committee or any similar U.S. body, one source said.

A spokesman for Rockefeller said he did not have a comment beyond the five-page letter sent to Leveson.

A spokesman for Leveson confirmed that the inquiry had received Rockfeller’s letter requesting assistance, but declined any further comment.

U.S. CONNECTIONS

News Corp and its 81-year-old chief are the subject of multiple British inquiries.

The company initially tried to contain the scandal by claiming phone hacking was limited to a single “rogue” reporter. But the controversy mushroomed, and more than 40 people, most of them journalists, have since been arrested on suspicion of bribery, phone hacking or other illegal activity. No charges have yet been filed.

The FBI last summer opened an investigation into possible phone hacking or other illegal reporting activities in the United States. To date, however, the FBI inquiry has found no evidence such practices were employed by journalists in the United States, a law enforcement source said.

Lawyers for British celebrities and other individuals have said there is evidence that Murdoch journalists may have engaged in questionable surveillance when the targets were physically on U.S. soil.

The lawyers have suggested that this could lead to the filing of civil lawsuits in U.S. courts alleging illegal practices by Murdoch operatives, although no such lawsuits have been filed and there may be jurisdictional limitations.

For example, actor Jude Law chose to go through the British courts replica watches, and not U.S. courts, in his phone-hacking case against Murdoch’s News International, despite claims that News of the World hacked phones or voice mails when Law and his assistant were at New York’s JFK Airport in 2003.

News International admitted “unconditionally” in British court documents earlier this year that it was liable for all Law’s claims. News Corp had no further comment.

A person familiar with legal issues surrounding such cases said that jurisdictional issues could be murky even when a target such as Law may have been physically present in the United States when the hacking occurred.

The person said U.S. legal exposure may be limited because Law is British, and the journalists or operatives who were targeting him were also likely British or based in Britain. Also replica watches, while his phone may have physically been in the United States at the time of hacking, the server that held his voice mail messages may well have been located in Britain, too.

A U.S. law enforcement source confirmed that the FBI was still conducting a criminal investigation into possible violations by Murdoch journalists or operatives of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which bars bribes to officials of foreign governments.

But the source also said that this investigation was a long way from generating criminal charges against anyone.

U.S. officials and legal experts have said that the most likely outcome of any Foreign Corrupt Practices Act investigation directed at Murdoch properties would be a large civil settlement rather than criminal charges under U.S. law.

This weekend over 1,000 college students from around the world descended upon Washington D.C. to participate in the 5th Annual Clinton Global Initiative University, or CGI U — a summit started by former President Bill Clinton in 2008 to inspire the youngest generation of Americans to lead a life of service.

ABC News’ Jake Tapper sat down exclusively with the former President to discuss the marked achievements of the collegiate arm of his CGI network, as well as the current political climate of this election year.

Looking at what has already been a tumultuous GOP primary season, President Clinton expressed doubt that candidate Mitt Romney could overcome his latest unfavorable ratings … a similar scenario Clinton himself faced when he ran in 1992.

“He’s gotta convince the swing voters that he’ll be moderate enough and open enough and inclusive enough to be an effective president, and effective on the economy,” Clinton said about Romney. ” And hope that the Republican base voters say, ‘Well, okay, so he maybe wasn’t as right-wing as he claimed to be in the primary.  Still more conservative than President Obama.  I guess I’ll vote for him anyway and I won’t stay home.’”

Clinton believes President Obama will win re-election “handily”, saying the 2010 midterm elections in his mind assured victory for Obama in November. As for the argument of whether voters are better off now than they were when Obama took office?  Clinton believes most Americans will be able to say just that come Election Day, adding “we have begun to dig our way out.  With the financial reform bill, we have taken steps to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.  And we’re moving in the right direction and have a better plan for the future than the other guys do.”

Clinton lauded President Obama’s national security team — Secretaries Panetta & Clinton, as well as NSA Director Tom Donilon. And when asked about his favorite Cabinet member — Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — and her potential political aspirations in 2016, President Clinton was quick to support any decision his wife makes, while admitting he’ll be happy if she does choose to head back to New York.

“I believe when she says she doesn’t think she’ll run, she’s being completely honest,” Clinton said. “I want her to do what she wants to do. I’m glad she’s comin’ home, I miss her.  We have fun together.”

But the focus for Clinton is the over 1 Tattoo Of Guns,000 college kids gathered in Washington this weekend. These students, representing over 300 colleges and universities and more than 80 countries,  each create their own “commitments to action”– a small-scale project connected to one of a host of topics — everything from human rights and healthcare Custom Tattoo Machines, to education and job creation.

The former President commended the ingenuity of the CGI U participants– saying the entire summit benefits from a dichotomy of groups.

“There are the young people who are always idealistic and always have good ideas. Then there are the young people who are disillusioned with government or with the private sector, who think, ‘Okay, I want to take things in my own hands. Start my own organization. Do something that makes a difference for the grassroots up,’” Clinton said.  “And we had both types of young people here. It was very interesting. ”

Two student initiatives Clinton highlighted belong to Tyler Spencer and Kyle McCollum.  Tyler’s commitment Grassroot, connects NCAA Division I athletes with local school children to promote HIV/AIDS awareness in Washington D.C., the city with the nation’s highest rates of infection.

Triple Thread, the commitment started by then-Vanderbilt student Kyle McCollum, hires recently released prisoners from the local jail, trains them in the t-shirt screen printing business Tattoo Machine For Sale, and offers them a job and a smooth transition back to the workforce.

“That’s just one school,” said President Clinton.  “If every college or university that had a prison within 40 miles did something similar, we could…”

After the interview, Clinton and Tapper took to the streets of Washington where hundreds of student participants at CGI U were partaking in an annual service project.

“We always end with a community service project so that people can not only have their ideas of what they want to do but they can get the experience of working together,” Clinton explained.  “They’re all sitting there doing these community service projects together.  I think it’s so good for them as well as good for the causes here. Wherever we work … wherever we meet … we always pick a different service projects.”

For the 5th annual CGI U, students participated in not one but two community service projects.  The first partnered with the USO to put together care packages for soldiers.  The second teamed up with Rebuilding Together to refurbish homes in a Northeast Washington neighborhood.

In the five years since its inception, Clinton Global Initiative University has had over 5,000 students declare over 4,000 commitments, many of them returning in consecutive years to grow their already successful endeavors. In 2012 alone, the students participating in CGI U made 915 commitments.

“Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts was in New Orleans to help launch CGI U. In the years since its inception, CGI U has been held on different college campuses across the country — California, Texas, Miami. In five years, the summit has awarded over $1 million in grants to various student initiatives.

Next up for President Clinton and CGI?  His summit on the U.S. economy & domestic job growth—CGI America—set for June 7 & 8 in Chicago.

BOSTON – Mitt Romney today revealed for the first time that he has put longtime adviser Beth Myers in charge of his vice presidential vetting process.

“I have selected someone who has been a counselor of mine for a number of years, Beth Myers. She was my chief of staff when I was governor,” the former Massachusetts governor told ABC News’ Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview.

“I’ve asked her to be the person who oversees the process of the vice presidential selection and vetting an analysis and so she’s begun that process and is putting together the kinds of things you need to do to vet potential candidates Buy Christian Audigier Clothes,” Romney added.

Asked whether there is a deadline for choosing his running mate, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee said he does have a deadline in mind but would not reveal the specifics.

“It would certainly be by the time of the convention,” he said. “I don’t think we’ve chosen the time we’d actually make an announcement,” Romney said during a stroll through Fenway Park, where he is scheduled to join two contest winners at a Red Sox game.

Ann Romney said this weekend, which the couple spent in Florida fundraising, was the first time they had actually spoken seriously about a vice presidential pick.

“You know it’s been interesting this weekend was the first time we seriously really talked about it and there are some wonderful people out there,” she told Sawyer. “So we’re thinking about it now and we haven’t allowed ourselves to go there yet and I think this is a time when we realize it’s very important and it’s time to think about it.”

“There are some pretty terrific people out there,” she added.

Romney, who recently spoke about the need to appeal to Hispanic voters, said  Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is “one of the terrific leaders” of the Republican Party Cheap Christian Audigier Clothing, but wouldn’t go as far as to say whether he is on the shortlist.

“I think it’s way too early to begin narrowing down who the potential vice presidential nominees might be,” Romney said. “But we’re beginning that process.”

Premier Mario Monti's government has approved a long-awaited package of labour reforms Tattoo Supplies, refusing to bend to union opposition and insisting the new rules will create a more flexible and inclusive labor market.

The measures are the third major initiative by Monti's government of technocrats since it took office in November charged with overhauling the stagnant Italian economy to promote growth and reduce its national debt of a staggering 120 per cent of its economic output.

The government said the measures, which were sought by the European Union, would encourage growth, create stable jobs and help businesses become more competitive.

A measure in the reforms that makes it easier to fire workers created the most serious challenge Monti has faced. He previously passed austerity measures – mostly tax hikes – and a package of measures to liberalise the market.

Italy's largest major trade union confederation has pledged 16 hours of general strikes and demonstrations against the measures, while politicians with ties to unions say they would also seek changes to the plan as it goes through parliament.

Monti pledged to monitor for abuses Tattoo Supplies, but insisted that companies would no longer be forced to rehire workers fired for economic reasons even if the employer's case is ruled unfounded, as has been allowed under a decades-old statute. A judge instead can order damages – even though these cases are relatively rare.

Monti left untouched rules allowing a court to order a company to rehire workers unjustly fired if discrimination is proven, or in some instances if a judge rules disciplinary action was not legal.

The reform also includes a new unemployment compensation system, limits on temporary workers to encourage permanent employment and help get more young people into the work force and measures to guarantee gender equality in the work place – specifically outlawing the practice of having women sign open-ended resignation letters commonly applied in the case of pregnancy.

The government declined to make the measures effective immediately, leaving a vehicle for lawmakers to make changes.

Senate President Renato Schifani said the move was “appreciated” by parliament.

There’s really no way to positively spin the disaster that took place in the Gulf of Mexico when BP’s Deepwater Horizon drilling platform exploded and leaked untold millions of gallons of oil into the ocean. The Cho Show

May 13, 2012

Fox News Channel Senior Vice President John Moody distributed a memo to his staff this morning announcing the network’s decision to “severely restrict” its use of the media package Cho Seung-Hui sent to NBC News.

“We see no reason to continue assaulting the public with these disturbing and demented images,” Moody wrote.

Seeing as Fox had been running continuous loops of Cho’s horror show ever since NBC News first broadcast it, the network was just a tad late in locating the public’s sensitivities to disturbing and demented images. Moody’s grandstanding reminded me of the scene from L.A. Confidential where the LAPD captain confronts the corrupt detective: “Don’t start trying to do the right thing Fake Baume & Mercier Watches, boyo. You haven’t had the practice.”

But Fox wasn’t alone in its belated discovery that too much Cho could be too much Cho. NBC News dittoed Fox in this release: “Beginning this morning, we have limited our usage of the video across NBC News, including MSNBC, to no more than 10 percent of our airtime.” CBS News and ABC News—which would have also churned the Cho videos and pictures into a fine multimedia pulp if they had cable outlets—offered similar communiqués.

What caused TV news to suddenly retreat in search of higher moral ground?

NBC News needn’t apologize to anybody for originally airing the Cho videos and pictures. The Virginia Tech slaughter is an ugly story, but the five W’s of journalism—who Replica Vacheron Constantin Watches, what, where Replica Corum Watches, when, and why—demand that journalists ask the question “why?” even if they can’t adequately answer it. If you’re interested in knowing why Cho did what he did Best place to buy Replica Technomarine Watches, you want to see the videos and photos and read from the transcripts. If you’re not interested, you should feel free to avert your eyes.

The real story here is the odd restraint NBC News showed. Cho mailed NBC News about two dozen QuickTime videos, of which the network has aired only a handful. NBC anchor Brian Williams said last night that the network is also holding back Cho photos Where buy best Replica Bell & Ross Watches, as well as Cho writings it deems incoherent and obscene. It seems to think that it’s protecting viewers by rationing Cho material while at the same time it reruns the already released video indiscriminately. (I wonder if Fox News would be so circumspect if it were sitting on a stockpile of fresh Cho. Actually, I don’t really wonder.)

I suspect the networks stopped the Cho reruns in an effort to pre-empt criticisms that they are 1) needlessly upsetting people and 2) inspiring potential copycat killers. As a practical matter, I’ll bet they were having a hard time getting the families of the murdered to talk to them as long as The Cho Show was running.

The Cho affair reveals once again how dependent cable news is on video wallpaper. Whenever a major story arrives, the cable news networks are forced to loop the most arresting images, even if they’re days or a week old, to give correspondents and sources an animated backdrop against which to talk. If the story is 9/11, the wallpaper is looped tape of the crash. If the story is the New Orleans catastrophe, it’s folks wading in chest-high water or looting stores. If the story is the space shuttle Columbia, it’s the death ship streaking its path across the sky like fireworks again and again.

Cable news reruns are usually defensible because nobody but invalids—and perhaps TVNewser—watches the stations around the clock. Viewers dip in for five minutes here, 15 or 30 minutes there Replica Jaquet Droz Watches, and then flit away. Few notice how much recycling goes on.
